Welcome to The Perfumer’s Notebook. Wales Perfumery’s niche perfume blog, written by perfumer Louise Smith from her lab in Monmouthshire. Here you’ll find fragrance guides, perfumer’s notes, the stories behind our scents, Wales Perfumery news and events, and an honest exploration of the world of niche perfume.
Whether you’re new to artisan fragrance or a lifelong collector, pull up a chair. There’s always something worth exploring.
Choosing, wearing, and caring for fragrance is an art, and like any art, a little knowledge goes a long way. Whether you’re just beginning to explore the world of scent or you’re a seasoned collector refining your collection, our Fragrance Tips are here to help you get the very most from every bottle.
Here at Wales Perfumery, we create niche fragrances from our studio in Monmouth, and we believe that understanding scent deepens your connection to it. That’s why we share everything we know, from the practical to the poetic, so that fragrance becomes more than something you wear. It becomes something you understand.
In this section, you’ll find guidance on the questions we hear most often. How do you make a fragrance last longer through the day? What’s the real difference between an Eau de Parfum and a Parfum, and does it actually matter? How many sprays should you use, and where? Can you layer fragrances, and if so, how do you do it well?
We answer all of this and more, drawing on our experience as working perfumers rather than simply passing on received wisdom. Our tips are grounded in the realities of formulation, which means when we tell you why a fragrance behaves the way it does, we can explain the chemistry behind it too.
Scent is deeply personal, and there are no hard rules. But there are techniques, insights, and a little perfumer’s knowledge that can help you wear fragrance with more confidence and more joy. We hope you find something useful here, and if you ever have a question we haven’t answered yet, feel free to get in touch.
