Buying gifts for perfume lovers is one of the loveliest things you can do, and also one of the most nerve-wracking. They know what they like. They have opinions. And scent is so personal that the same fragrance can be perceived quite differently from one person to the next.
I’ve spent years helping people find fragrances they love, both in the studio and at my workshops, so I wanted to share how I’d approach it. Whether you know their taste inside out or haven’t a clue, there’s a thoughtful gift here for them.
At a Glance
The best clue is already on their dressing table. Take a quiet look at the bottles they reach for, or listen out for what they compliment on other people. You don’t need to know the exact perfume. What you’re looking for is the fragrance family, because someone who loves one fresh citrus scent will usually enjoy another.
Here’s a rough guide to the families, with a few of mine as examples:
If they wear a mix of everything, that’s a clue in itself. They’re probably an explorer, which brings me neatly to discovery sets.

This is where I’d always recommend a discovery set. Each of mine holds every fragrance in that collection as a 2ml vial, so they can wear each one for a few days and get to know it properly. A fragrance changes over the course of a day as it settles on the skin, and a few hours tells you far more than a quick spritz at a counter ever could.
If you’d rather leave the choice entirely to them, perfume gift vouchers let them pick their own. There’s no shame in a voucher when it comes to fragrance. Most perfume lovers would much rather choose for themselves than wear something that isn’t quite them.
Some people have found their fragrance and they’re sticking with it. That’s wonderful, but it can make gifting tricky. A few ideas:

For the real enthusiast, the most memorable gift might not be a bottle at all. My perfume making experiences are hands-on sessions where you work with real perfumery materials, learn how a fragrance is built, and leave with one you’ve made yourself. Experiences can be given as a voucher, so they can book a date that suits them.
I often meet people at workshops who’ve worn fragrance all their lives but never smelled the individual materials. Seeing their faces when they discover what a material really smells like on its own is one of my favourite parts of the job.
If you’re shopping for Christmas, I’ve gathered my most giftable pieces into one place: my Christmas perfume gifts collection, from stocking fillers to something really special. If you’re working to a budget, my perfume gift ideas £30 and under include discovery sets, travel sizes and hair and body mists. Click the images below to see them all!
If you’re buying early, keep the gift somewhere cool and dark until it’s time to wrap it. Heat and light are the enemies of fragrance, and a sunny windowsill or a warm car can change how a scent smells over time. A drawer or wardrobe is perfect. There’s more on this in my guide to how to wear and store perfume, which applies all year round.
The perfume lovers I know care less about price than about feeling understood. A small travel spray chosen because you noticed the scent they always wear means far more than an expensive bottle picked at random. Trust what you’ve noticed about them, and you won’t go far wrong.
Happy gifting,
Louise x
