When I first started my journey into perfumery, the fragrance wheel felt like discovering a secret map to an entire universe of scent. It’s one of the most beautiful tools we have for understanding how different aromas relate to each other, and I’m excited to share this world with you.
Think of the fragrance wheel as a compass for your nose, it helps you navigate the vast landscape of scent and discover new territories you might love.
Created by fragrance expert Michael Edwards, the fragrance wheel organises scents into families that sit next to their closest relatives, just like colours on an artist’s palette. The closer two families are on the wheel, the more they have in common. It’s brilliant in its simplicity and has revolutionised how we talk about fragrance.
Fresh Family: The Awakening
Starting at the top, we have Fresh fragrances. These are your citrusy, aquatic, and green scents. Think lemon zest, ocean breeze, and crushed mint leaves. As a perfumer, I love working in this family because fresh scents are like that first sip of morning coffee, they wake up your senses and make you feel alive. Bergamot, grapefruit, and marine accords live here, creating fragrances that feel clean, energizing, and effortlessly elegant.
Floral Family: The Heart
Moving clockwise, we enter the Floral family; the largest and most beloved family in perfumery. From delicate white florals like jasmine and tuberose to romantic roses and powdery violets, this is where emotions bloom. I find florals incredibly versatile; they can be innocent or seductive, vintage or modern. When I’m blending florals, I’m painting with petals, creating bouquets that tell stories.
Amber Family: The Mystery
The amber family brings warmth, spice, and sensuality. These are your amber, vanilla, and spice-driven fragrances that wrap around you like cashmere. Amber scents are deeply personal, they develop beautifully on warm skin and create that intimate sillage that draws people closer. Working with ingredients like sandalwood, patchouli, and exotic spices feels like crafting liquid
gold.
Woody Family: The Foundation
Woody fragrances offer grounding and sophistication. Cedar, oak moss, and vetiver create compositions that remind me of walking through ancient forests, deeply comforting and timeless.
Gourmand Family: The Indulgence
The newest family, Gourmands smell good enough to eat! Vanilla, chocolate, caramel, and coffee create fragrances that are comforting and utterly delicious. They’re like wearing your favourite dessert.
Chypre Family: The Classic
Chypre deserves special mention. These sophisticated fragrances built on bergamot, labdanum, and oakmoss create some of perfumery’s most elegant compositions. They’re complex, refined, and utterly timeless.
What makes the wheel magical is how families blend into each other. Fresh Florals bridge citrus and blooms, Floral Ambers marry romance with sensuality, and Woody Ambers combine earthiness with spice.
When someone asks me to help them find their signature scent, I often start with the wheel. Are you drawn to the energy of Fresh? The romance of Floral? The mystery of amber? The sophistication of Woody? There’s no right answer, only what speaks to your soul.
I encourage you to explore neighbouring families too. If you love florals, try a fresh floral or a floral amber. You might discover a new favourite that perfectly captures a different facet of your personality.
The fragrance wheel isn’t just a tool, it’s an invitation to explore, experiment, and find the scents that make you feel most authentically you.
Happy exploring!
