What is the difference between Parfum and Eau-de-Parfum? A perfumer’s guide to understanding fragrance concentrations.

As a perfumer, I’m often asked about the differences between parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, and Eau de Cologne. It’s one of those questions that seems simple on the surface but actually opens up a fascinating world of fragrance craftsmanship. Let me walk you through these concentrations and help you understand what each one brings to your scent experience.

What’s the difference between Parfum and Eau de Parfum – The Quick Answer

TypeAromatic oilsWear time
Parfum20-40%6-8 hours
Eau de Parfum (EDP)15-25%4-6 hours
Eau de Toilette (EDT)8-15%2-4 hours
Eau de Cologne3-8%1-2 hours

The higher the concentration of aromatic oils, the stronger and longer-lasting the scent. Parfum is the richest and most intimate, Eau de Cologne the lightest and most fleeting, everything else sits between the two.

The Foundation: It’s All About Concentration

Think of fragrance concentrations like tea; the longer you steep it, the stronger it becomes. In perfumery, we’re working with aromatic compounds dissolved in alcohol and water, and the percentage of these precious oils determines not just the strength, but the entire character of your fragrance experience.

What is Parfum? The crown jewel

Concentration: 20-40% aromatic compounds
Parfum (Extrait de Parfum) is the most luxurious and intense form of fragrance, and honestly, it’s where my perfumer’s heart truly lies. With the highest concentration of aromatic oils, parfum offers the richest, most nuanced experience. It’s like listening to a symphony in full orchestration. Every note has space to breathe and develop.

What I love about parfum is its longevity. We’re talking 6-8 hours of beautiful development on your skin, sometimes even longer. The sillage (that gorgeous trail you leave behind) is intimate and sophisticated. Because there’s less alcohol, parfum feels gentler on sensitive skin and creates this wonderful, almost oily richness that hugs close to your body.

What is Eau de Parfum? The perfect balance

Concentration: 15-25% aromatic compounds
This is my go-to recommendation for most fragrance lovers, and it’s what I use for many of my own creations. Eau de Parfum (or EDP) strikes this beautiful balance between intensity and wearability. You get 4-6 hours of gorgeous fragrance development with excellent projection. People will notice your scent without being overwhelmed.

EDP gives you complexity without being too heavy for daily wear. It’s substantial enough that you feel properly “dressed” in your fragrance, but versatile enough for both day and evening wear.

What is Eau de Toilette? Fresh and lively

Concentration: 8-15% aromatic compounds
Eau de Toilette (or EDT) is like a breath of fresh air: lighter, brighter, and wonderfully refreshing. With 2-4 hours of wear time, it’s perfect for those who prefer a more subtle approach to fragrance or for hot summer days when you want something that won’t feel heavy.

I call our EDT formulation “hair and body mist”. It’s perfect for spritzing on post-workout, after a shower, and for those who like to reapply their fragrance throughout the day. There’s something lovely about that ritual of refreshing your scent.

What is Eau de Cologne? The original refresher

Concentration: 3-8% aromatic compounds
Cologne has such a wonderful history, it’s actually the oldest form of modern perfumery! Light, fresh, and invigorating, it typically lasts 1-2 hours and is perfect for that immediate burst of freshness.

Think of cologne as your fragrant pick-me-up. It’s lovely for hot climates, post-workout refreshing, or anytime you want a quick scent boost without commitment.

So what is the difference between Parfum and Eau de Parfum, and why does it matter for you?

When I’m helping someone choose a concentration, I always ask: How do you want to experience fragrance? Do you want it to be your signature presence that develops throughout the day? Go for parfum or EDP. Prefer something light and refreshing that you can layer and reapply? EDT or cologne might be perfect.

Remember, there’s no wrong choice, only what feels right for your lifestyle and preferences. After all, fragrance should always be a joy, never a burden.

Happy exploring!
